Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s surprising split has shaken Hollywood as it came unexpectedly, just two years after they sealed their long term relationship.
During their good old days, there seemed to be few hints of trouble for the pair. They were last seen together in July making a stop inside a Jamba Juice store in Los Angeles with their 10-year-old daughter Shiloh, but both actors had been busy with film projects in the months leading up to their breakup.
“The divorce is a complete shock,” a source close to the couple told PEOPLE Magazine.
“They have definitely spent more time apart this year, but it’s still a shock. They just celebrated their wedding anniversary together.”
According to the documents obtained by some foreign media houses, the 41-year-old actress filed for divorce from Pitt on Monday, September, 19, citing irreconcilable differences.
Jolie asked for physical custody of the couple’s shared six children – Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, Vivienne and Knox.
She also requested that Pitt, 52, be granted visitation but did not ask for child or spousal support.
Obviously embittered, Pitt acknowledged the divorce and made a statement expressing his concern for their six children.
“I am very saddened by this, but what matters most now is the well-being of our kids,” he said in the statement.
“I kindly ask the press to give them the space they deserve during this challenging time.”
Jolie also released a statement addressing the divorce through her attorney.
“This decision was made for the health of the family,” the statement read. “She will not be commenting at this time, and asks that the family be given their privacy during this difficult time.”
Despite Jolie filing for sole physical custody, a source told PEOPLE that Pitt wants to be present in his six kids’ lives.
“Brad thinks Angelina is a great mother,” the insider says. “But he is also a great father. There is no way he is going to be absent for any part of his kids’ lives.”
However, the source believes the conflict will be resolved peacefully.
“This will ideally be resolved, amicably, long before any sort of legal battle ensues,” the insider added.
Meanwhile, shortly after news of the divorce broke, the New York Post reported Jolie left her husband after suspecting he had been unfaithful with Cotillard, his co-star in the upcoming World War II drama Allied.
However, another source vowed that the couple’s breakup has nothing to do with Cotillard.

Jon Voight voiced concern over his daughter’s ending marriage in an interview with Inside Edition Magazine.
“It’s very sad,” the 77-year-old actor said. “Something very serious must have happened for Angie to make a decision like this.”
He continued, “I don’t know what it is. It’s a sad thing. Say a little prayer.”

While it may be assumed those in Hollywood’s inner circle are the first to be told about news before the media and public, George Clooney, American actor, filmmaker, and activist who is also close to the couple learned of the divorce of his friends Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie along with the rest of the world – in the news.
“I didn’t know that, wow. I feel very sorry then. That’s a sad story and unfortunate for a family,” the 55-year-old said. “It’s an unfortunate story about a family. I feel very sorry to hear that. That’s the first I’ve heard of it,” he told CNN.
Other Hollywood celebrities are also sharing surprise over the end of one of its most high-profile relationships, as the hashtag #Brangelina shot to the top of Twitter’s trending list since the news broke.
