The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed receiving letters of intent from 110 associations seeking to register as political parties ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, made this known on Wednesday, June 25, during the commission’s second quarterly consultative meeting with media executives in Abuja.
Yakubu said that as of June 23, INEC had received 110 requests, which are being processed in line with legal provisions and established guidelines. He added that all but six of the applications had been acknowledged, with the remaining ones to be addressed by the end of the week.
The INEC boss emphasized that all requests—regardless of whether they come from prominent individuals or regular citizens—would be treated equally. He also dismissed allegations suggesting the commission’s independence had been compromised, noting similar claims were made back in 2013.
Yakubu announced that the full list of applicant associations and their details would be made publicly available via INEC’s website and social media platforms to ensure transparency. He also reminded the public that the commission’s 2022 Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties are accessible online.
In addition, he disclosed that INEC is finalizing plans to conduct pending by-elections and resume continuous voter registration across the country, with details to be announced within 24 hours.
Among the 110 groups seeking registration are the Obidient Peoples Party (OPP), Key of Freedom Party (KFP), Absolute Congress (ABC), All Grassroots Party (AGP), Congress Action Party (CAP), and United Social Democrats (USDP).
Others include National Action Congress Party (NACP), Great Alliance Party (GAP), New Nigeria Congress (NNC), United Peoples Victory Party (UPVP), Allied Conservative Congress (ACC), Peoples Freedom Party (PFP), All Nigerians’ Party (AND), and Abundant Social Party (ASP).
