Nollywoood Actress, Funke Akindele has narrated how Singer D’banj Encouraged her to bring back her dying brand ‘jenifa’.
During the singer’s celebration of his 20th year anniversary in the music industry, she revealed that the singer urged her to keep the jenifa brand alive.
In her words:
“After the big break with ‘Jenifa’, everybody loved Jenifa so much I was out there, there was celebration everywhere Then Mr.Coker invited me to his club then,he said; ‘i want to host you, you are very hardworking, I love jenifa’ So with the cast and crew members, we went and I saw D’banj for the first time, the Dbanj that we always saw on tv
He said;’Am here to serenade you’.
We danced and all that so he gave me his number and sat me down and took me to a private corner and said:’Why did you let jenifa go like that’.
I said jenifa is over, he said why would jenifa go like that, that’s a brand you can feed on for the rest of your life, he said no, jenifa has to come back, nothing bad happened to jenifa,so he said any support I need, he will give me So I reached out to him, he said when you have a brand,you feed on the brand, you milk the brand very well,make money out of it, and out of his pocket, he have me some money and said, ‘go and write another jenifa, I support you’ I was like really?, with no strings attached, he said go, and I wrote the return of jenifa and till date, the brand is still relevant God used him to speak to me Dbanj you’re more than just a musician, you are a movement, your music has brought joy to our hearts, and your legacy will live on forever”.
