'Studying criminology was just a way for me to express my other interests'- Marenikae

Nigerian budding singer Marenikae has said she studied criminology in the US despite knowing that she would end up an artiste.
The singe,  whose father was a record label owner, said she decided to obtain a degree in the security intelligence course because she had always been passionate about solving problems.
In a chat with Punch’s Saturday Beat, she said:
“As a child, my dad had a label called, ‘Africa N Vogue’, and he worked with several Nigerian artists like Daddy Showkey and the Plantashun Boiz back in the day.
However, despite my music background, I decided to study criminology because I have a really analytical mind, I mentally pick at things and am constantly trying to figure out the ‘why’ and ‘how’ of everything.
I enjoy trying to figure out how other minds work, so criminology was just a way for me to express my other interests aside from Music.
“When I was a child, I wanted to be a forensic pathologist and a neurosurgeon and I remember playing detective games! I definitely wanted something that was challenging for me, fascinating and outside the arts.
But simply because I studied criminology does not mean I would get a typical 9 to 5 job. I don’t think that kind of life is for me.”
Marenikae added that she went back to music because it enabled her explore her creative side.
“Well, I’m a creative person and I love to be able to release my creativity through different outlets.
Music is special to me because it’s so easy and at the same time, so difficult.
Making music and writing songs and arranging harmonies come so naturally to me.
It’s spontaneous and it’s also like labour and the emotions attached to creating a song is almost like giving birth to a child, frightening and beautiful.”
