    Former Zamfara deputy governor among victims of Abuja-Kaduna train attack

    A former Deputy Governor of Zamfara State, Ibrahim Wakkala, sustained gunshot wounds in Monday’s terrorist attack on a Kaduna-bound train.

    The train conveying hundreds of passengers from Abuja to Kaduna was attacked by gunmen suspected to be bandits between Katari and Rijana in Kaduna State.

    Wakkala was returning from Saturday’s All Progressives Congress (APC) national convention, Channels TV reported an aide to have said.

    The former deputy governor was shot during the cross fire between the terrorists and the military and has been moved to a military hospital in Kaduna for treatment.

    Zamfara APC spokesperson Yusuf Idris also confirmed the incident.

    Idris said Wakkala was initially abducted by the terrorists during the attack but was successfully rescued by the combined forces from the Department of State Services (DSS) and the military.

    “He was initially abducted but was rescued by the DSS and military, it was during the process he sustain gunshot injury in the leg.”

    “He is very okay now, he is receiving treatment at the hospital in Kaduna state.” Idris was quoted to have said.

    In the wake of the Abuja-Kaduna train attack, the government suspended all train services on the route.

    Nigeria’s chief of army staff Lt General Farouk Yahaya visited the scene om Tuesday and called for greater security focus on the country’s rail network.
