Civil and public servants in Oyo State are now required to incorporate traditional Aso Oke fabric into their attire every Thursday, in addition to the existing practice of wearing native outfits on Fridays.
This directive was officially communicated through a circular issued by the Office of the Head of Service to heads of ministries and agencies on January 27, 2025.
“Every Thursday and Friday, our workforce will serve as ambassadors of tradition and agents of economic transformation,” the directive stated.
According to the circular, the policy is more than just a dress code—it is a strategic initiative aimed at reaffirming cultural identity while strengthening grassroots economies.
The initiative seeks to preserve Yoruba culture, empower local artisans, boost the informal economy, and highlight the state’s rich cultural heritage.
Governor Seyi Makinde emphasized that this directive would provide significant support to local weavers, dyers, and tailors, thereby creating jobs, sustaining livelihoods, and increasing income for artisans.
He further projected that the policy would spur demand for indigenous fabrics, stimulate growth in the informal sector, promote tourism, and drive inclusive economic development.
