Kingibe, a Nigerian politician and civil engineer: Hajiya Ireti Heebah Kingibe (born 2 June 1954) is a Nigerian politician and civil engineer who represents the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in the Senate of Nigeria. She is a member of the Labour Party and the chairman of the Senate Committee on Women Affairs. She is also the wife of Ambassador Babagana Kingibe, a former Secretary to the Federal Government, and the younger sister of Ajoke Muhammed, the widow of former Nigerian head of state Murtala Muhammed.
 

Early Life and Education.

 
Kingibe was born in Lagos State, Nigeria to a Muslim father, Abdulquadri Lanval, who was half Yoruba and half Fulani, and a Christian mother, who had links to Delta and Bonny in Rivers State. She has three siblings: two brothers and a sister. She lost her mother at the age of five and was raised by her father, who was a strict disciplinarian. Kingibe’s education started at Emotan Preparatory School, after which she attended Queen’s College Lagos and Washington Irving High School for her secondary school education. She then obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Minnesota, United States, in 1980, becoming one of the very few female engineers in Nigeria at that time.
 

Career.

 
Kingibe started her career as a Quality Control Engineer with Bradley Precast Concrete Inc. in Minnesota, USA, from 1978 to 1979. She then moved on to work with the Minnesota Department of Transportation Design Unit, where she also worked as an engineer from 1979 to 1991. She returned to Nigeria for her one-year mandatory service year between 1981 and 1982. She was posted to work as a Project Supervisor with the Nigerian Air Force Base in Ikeja, Lagos. In 1982, she joined the New Nigeria Construction Company (NNCC) in Kaduna as a Planning Engineer. In 1985, she left NNCC to work as a Consultant for Belsam Limited. She then became the Regional Engineer for Lodigiani Nigeria Limited Lagos between 1990 and 1994. She currently works as a Senior Partner with Kelnic Associates, Abuja.

 Politics.

 
Kingibe’s political career began in 1990 with her appointment as Adviser to the National Chairman of the defunct Social Democratic Party (SDP). She was involved in the presidential campaign of Moshood Abiola and her husband Babagana Kingibe, who were the SDP candidates for the annulled June 12, 1993 election. In 2003, she contested for the FCT senatorial seat under the All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP), but lost to Isa Maina of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). She defected to PDP in 2006 and became an active member of the party. However, in 2014, she joined the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing dissatisfaction with the politics in PDP.
 
In 2015, she ran for the senatorial seat under APC, but later withdrew from the race due to personal reasons. She then joined Labour Party in 2022 and became their FCT senatorial candidate for the 2023 Nigerian general elections. She won the election with 52% of the votes, defeating Isa Maina of PDP and Musa Dikko of APC. Before the election, she pledged her basic salary (if elected) to a special fund to tackle infrastructural deficits in the rural communities within the FCT. She also promised to empower women and youths through skill acquisition and entrepreneurship programs.
