How critics threatened me with pregnancy rumors – Tems reveals

Renowned Nigerian singer Temilade Openiyi, widely known as Tems, recently opened up about receiving death threats following rumors of her pregnancy.

The speculation emerged after her appearance at Burberry’s Spring/Summer 2024 London Fashion Week show, where she wore a black dress with a purple fluffy coat and matching heels, leading to assumptions due to the attire’s fit.

In an interview with The Beat 99.9 FM, Lagos, the Grammy-winning artist addressed the social media speculation that connected American rapper Future to the alleged pregnancy, despite never having met him personally. She expressed her shock at the intensity of the reaction, mentioning,

“When I heard [the rumors] that I was pregnant, I didn’t actually think anybody believed it. I didn’t know it was serious until I started getting messages like death threats, like, ‘How dare you? Of all the people in the world, Future, really?’ And I’ve never met him in my life. So it’s crazy.”

Tems clarified her professional relationship with Future, highlighting their collaboration on the rapper’s Grammy-winning song, ‘Wait For U’ alongside Drake, and debunked any personal connection leading to the rumors.

During the interview, Tems also shared her interest in directing a music video for Asake, a member of YBNL. She expressed admiration for his artistry, specifying her admiration for his work and her desire to direct his music video, stating,

“I love him. I can tell that he is very artistic.”

The Grammy-winning artist’s focus on professional collaborations and her experience of facing intense scrutiny in the realm of social media rumors were the key points of her recent revelations.
