I went from bearing Oyin to Ayra Starr – Nigerian singer shares the story behind her name

In a recent interview with Arise TV, Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe, who’s rocked the Nigerian music scene as Ayra Starr, dished out the backstory of her stage name. It’s a blend of her own thinking and a creative spin from her record label boss, Don Jazzy.

Ayra shared how she morphed the Yoruba name,

“Ira” into “Ayra” to make sure people said it the way she envisioned. The spelling “A Y R A” clicked for her, feeling like a nudge from fate. Then, Don Jazzy, the head honcho at Mavin Records, put the cherry on top by adding “Starr” to it.

Before her days with Mavin Records, she was simply “Oyin,” a cute cut from her first name. Now, as Ayra Starr, a name signifying being “woke and open-minded,” she’s all about getting respect and making waves in the music industry.
