The Federal High Court in Lagos has issued an order restraining the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) from arresting or penalizing drivers for using vehicles with faded number plates.

Justice Akintayo Aluko delivered the judgment on Friday, also prohibiting the FRSC from imposing fines or p¥nishments on drivers for the condition of their number plates.

The judgment followed a suit filed by legal practitioner Chinwike Chamberlain Ezebube against the FRSC. Ezebube, in an Originating Summons filed on February 13, 2024, sought clarity on the FRSC’s responsibilities under the Federal Road Safety Commission Act of 2007. He questioned whether the FRSC, as the sole designer and producer of vehicle number plates in Nigeria, is not entirely accountable for ensuring the quality and durability of the plates it produces.

The court’s decision reinforces the notion that the FRSC holds responsibility for the integrity of the number plates it issues.
