Dozens of people were killed on Monday, February 6, 2023 when a major earthquake of magnitude 7.8 hit central Turkey and northwest Syria.
The quake, which struck at 04:17 local time (01:17 GMT) at a depth of 17.9km (11 miles) near the city of Gaziantep, also left hundreds of people inj¥red and several buildings including a shopping mall d£stroyed.
The quake was also felt in Cyprus and Lebanon, Reuters reports.
Turkey’s di$aster agency said 76 people had been killed, and 440 hurt, as authorities scrambled rescue teams and supply aircraft to the area around the city of Kahramanmaras, while declaring a “level 4 alarm” that calls for international assistance.
In Syria, at least 42 people were killed, according to media reports. There are fears the d£ath toll will rise sharply in the coming hours.
In Malatya province, north-east of Gaziantep, at least 23 people were killed, local officials said. In Sanliurfa, to the east, there were 17 deaths. And more d£aths were reported in Diyarbakir and Osmaniye.
