Lagos govt introducing ₦50,000 fine for overspeeding

The Lagos State government has deployed four new Intelligent Transport System (ITS) sites across the state to enhance traffic management and improve road safety.

Speaking at a press briefing on Thursday, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, Commissioner for Transportation, said the installations were carried out in partnership with Huawei Technologies and are designed to complement existing Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras and other Traffic Management Solution (TMS) devices.

Osiyemi explained that checkpoint sites for speed monitoring have been installed at Alapere, Ogudu Road, where the speed limit is set at 80 km/h, and Nitel, Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, with a 60 km/h limit. These sites, he noted, are aimed at reducing speeding, which remains one of the leading causes of road accidents.

In addition, e-police sites with advanced surveillance cameras have been set up at Allen Avenue Junction, Ikeja, and Nurudeen Olowopopo Road. These installations are designed to detect traffic violations such as running red lights and illegal U-turns using high-definition cameras.

Osiyemi emphasized that the digital solutions will help regulate traffic flow and deter reckless driving through real-time monitoring. He warned that traffic offenders would face strict penalties, with a ₦20,000 fine for running a red light and a ₦50,000 fine for exceeding the speed limit.
