The Lagos State Government has revealed that residents collectively spend more than N13 trillion each month on electricity, a figure deemed unsustainable given the persistent challenges of unreliable power supply.
Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Mr. Biodun Ogunleye, disclosed this on Thursday during a press briefing at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre, Alausa, Ikeja. The briefing was held ahead of the inaugural Lagos Energy Summit, scheduled for April 15–18, 2025.
Ogunleye described the high cost of electricity for both residents and the government as a sign of the urgent need for alternative and more reliable energy solutions.
“N13 trillion monthly is an enormous expense, especially when power supply remains inconsistent. This highlights the urgent need for a more sustainable energy strategy,” he said.
