Nationwide Blackout as National Grid Collapses Yet Again

Several major Nigerian cities, including Lagos, have been throwned into darkness on Friday following a major collapse of the national power grid.

The latest outage comes just days after the federal government touted a “historic rise” in power generation to 6,000MW. However, a sudden grid disturbance saw generation plummet from around 4,000MW earlier in the day to below 1,000MW by 2 PM.

At its peak, power generation on Friday morning stood at 5,284MW, but by 4 PM, only a meager 803MW was available, with many power plants yet to resume supply.

Confirming the outage, the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC) notified customers of the system failure. “Dear esteemed customer, please be informed that we experienced a system outage today, 07/03/2025, at 14:00hrs, affecting supply within our network,” the company stated, assuring customers that restoration efforts were ongoing in collaboration with key stakeholders.

Similarly, the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) acknowledged the disruption, stating: “Dear valued customer, please be informed that a system disruption occurred on March 7, 2025, at 13:59 hrs, leading to a widespread power outage across our network. We are actively working with our partners to ensure a swift restoration of the grid.

Updates will be provided as soon as power is restored. We appreciate your patience.” The power crisis underscores ongoing challenges in Nigeria’s electricity sector, despite government claims of improvements.
