Over 1,000 guns found in Los Angeles mansion raid

More than 1,000 firearms have been found at a multi-million dollar mansion in a wealthy neighbourhood of Los Angeles.

Police and agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) seized the haul at a home in Holmby Hills after they received an anonymous tip-off.

Authorities discovered hundreds of rifles, shotguns and handguns and thousands of rounds of ammunition, along with weapons manufacturing equipment and tools.

Aerial footage of the raid showed investigators going through the massive cache of different types of guns scattered outside the property – situated on the border of Bel Air, near the Playboy Mansion and close to the estate where Michael Jackson died.

“Obviously it’s a lot,” Los Angeles Police Department spokesman Mike Lopez told the Los Angeles Times.

The ATF federal agency told the newspaper authorities “have no reason to believe the public is in any danger”.

Photographs from the scene showed an entire room stacked with boxes containing ammunition.

“The weapons are all makes and calibres, and models… This is a big, big stash you might say, that’s beyond comprehension that somebody can have so many weapons in a residence like this, in a neighbourhood such as this,” Fox News reported a police officer saying at the scene.

A man has been arrested on suspicion of manufacturing and selling assault weapons and high-powered rifles.

Both the LAPD and ATF gave no further details and said the investigation was ongoing.
