Starting Sunday, June 8, 2025, the cost of obtaining driver’s licenses and number plates in Nigeria will increase following a new price structure approved by the Joint Tax Board (JTB).

The board announced that the adjustments were necessary due to the integration of enhanced security features and a rise in production costs.

According to the JTB’s May 2025 statement, the revised fees apply nationwide and all relevant licensing authorities have been directed to enforce the new rates. A standard driver’s license for motor vehicles will now cost ₦15,000 for three years and ₦21,000 for five years. For tricycle operators, the license will cost ₦7,000 and ₦11,000 for the same durations. Standard number plates for both private and commercial vehicles are now priced at ₦30,000, while fancy vehicle plates have climbed to ₦400,000. Motorcycle number plates have also been adjusted, with the standard option now ₦12,000 and the fancy variant ₦50,000.

This latest review is not unprecedented. In 2021, the JTB approved similar increases, citing improved security features and higher production costs at the time.

The current adjustments reflect ongoing efforts by the tax board to modernize vehicle identification and maintain national security standards, even as they pass on the rising cost of implementation to motorists.
