Members of the National Peace Committee (NPC), led by a former military head of state, Abdusalami Abubakar, held a meeting with the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, and his running mate, Peter
Obi, in Abuja.
The meeting, which took place at the Secretariat of the National Peace Committee (NPC) on Thursday evening, had in attendance Abubakar, the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Matthew Kukah, Cardinal John Onaiyekan, Rev Fr Atta Barkindo and other members of the committee.
Some senior members of Atiku campaign team reported to be at the meeting included the Senate President Bukola Saraki, PDP chairman, Prince Uche Secondus, Speaker Yakubu Dogara and other PDP leaders.
It is understood that the committee met with the PDP chieftains due to Atiku’s decision to challenge President Muhammadu Buhari’s victory in court.
Atiku described the election as a sham.
The former vice president said had he lost in a free and fair election, he would have called the victor to congratulate him.
In a statement shared on Facebook, Atiku said the militarization of the electoral process was a disservice to Nigeria’s democracy and a throwback to the jackboot era of military dictatorship.
He divulged that he had spoken with Abdusalami after INEC declared Buhari the winner.
After the meeting with Atiku, the NPC proceeded to the presidential villa where they also met with Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo .
