Senate approves motion to fast track Police reform bill, curb killings of innocent Nigerians

The Police reform bill is about to be signed. The Senate, Tuesday, adopted the motion urging it to intervene in the ceaseless extra-judicial killings of innocent Nigerians by some operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, through expeditious passage of the Police reform bill.

The motion was sponsored by Senator Dino Melaye representing Kogi West.

This motion, according to Melaye, became necessary against the backdrop of the tragic incidents wherein trigger-happy policemen in separate occasions killed three innocent citizens in Lagos.

The fiery lawmaker under order 42 moved the motion of urgent importance, urged the Senate to intervene in the mindless killings almost becoming the order of the day to forestall and curb the menace.

In his words, “Mr. President and distinguished colleagues, I draw the attention of the Senate to the senseless killings of some innocent Nigerians by operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS.

“Men of SARs on different occasions and places killed three innocent Nigerians.

“I’m bringing this motion before the Senate because we are not in a war situation.

“The Police reform bill is now important than ever.

“We shall look at the bill expeditiously if possible pass it on time. So that the trigger-happy and overzealous men of the Nigeria Police Force, NPF, will stop the careless killings of innocent Nigerians.”

However, presiding Senate President, Bukola Saraki, who disapproved Melaye of full presentation of the motion, ordered that the motion be presented tomorrow.

While hitting the gavel for approval, Saraki also ordered the chairmen of the committees on Police, Rules and Business to ensure that the motion was reflected in the order paper of Wednesday, April 17, for presentation and debate.
