Renowned Nigerian filmmaker Dimeji Ajibola, the creative mind behind the critically acclaimed movie Shanty Town, has tragically passed away.
The news was confirmed by fellow filmmaker Samuel Olatunji, who shared a heartfelt tribute on Instagram.
“Dimeji Ajibola was my client and guy! So sad to hear this sad news. Rest in peace to a great guy! Sad Sunday as director of Shanty Town Passed away!” he wrote.
Ajibola’s contributions to the Nigerian film industry extended beyond directing. He was a versatile talent, excelling as a writer, producer, and animator.
His passion for storytelling was evident in his work, which often explored the gritty realities of urban life.
Before making his mark as a filmmaker, Dimeji Ajibola honed his skills as an animator. His initial aspiration was to bring stories to life through animation, but he eventually transitioned to filmmaking, recognizing the challenges and limitations of the medium at the time.
In 2009, he embarked on a journey to the New York Film Academy in the United States to further his education and refine his craft. Upon his return to Nigeria, he put his newfound knowledge to the test by writing and directing the film Hoodrush in 2010-2011, which was released in 2012.
