The Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Maiha, has unveiled plans to revitalize Nigeria’s leather industry by promoting local manufacturing of shoes, belts, and bags.
Speaking on Channels Television, Maiha underscored the need for centralized abattoirs and skin collection centers to enhance the efficient use of hides and skins. He stressed that structured animal processing would not only ensure hygienic meat production but also secure vital raw materials for the leather sector.
Highlighting economic losses, Maiha pointed out that consuming hides as food limits the industry’s potential. “When we eat hides, we are essentially consuming shoes, bags, and belts that could have been produced locally,” he said. He also warned against the hazardous practice of using kerosene to burn animal skins and advocated for safer processing methods.
Maiha estimated that the leather industry could create 700,000 jobs and generate N23 billion annually. He cited successful local footwear production in Maiduguri and Aba, where manufacturers are already supplying jungle boots to the military.
Encouraging Nigerians to support locally made products, he criticized the preference for foreign brands. “We must break free from our dependence on international labels. Increased local patronage will drive improvements in quality,” he stated.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment, Maiha announced plans for a nationwide stakeholder consultation to align industry development with policy support.
