Veteran stage actor, Mark Blum dies at 69 of coronavirus complications

Actor Mark Blum, known for playing Madonna’s love interest in the legendary 1985 New York City film “Desperately Seeking Susan,” has passed away due to coronavirus complications, aged 69.

His wife of 15 years, Janet Zarish said he died at New York-Presbyterian Hospital on Wednesday after being diagnosed last week with the coronavirus. She also added that Blum was asthmatic.

The New York theater company Playwrights Horizons also released a statement confirming the death of the actor known for his roles in “Crocodile Dundee” and “Desperately Seeking Susan.

“With love and heavy hearts, Playwrights Horizons pays tribute to Mark Blum, a dear longtime friend and a consummate artist who passed this week,” the company said.

“Thank you, Mark, for all you brought to our theater, and to theaters and audiences across the world. We will miss you.”

His Broadway credits include Gore Vidal’s The Best Man (2012) and Neil Simon’s Lost In Yonkers (1991), and his most recent and final Broadway appearance in Richard Greenberg’s The Assembled Parties (2013).

Blum who was well-known in New York’s theater community, having appeared in several Broadway productions throughout his career after making his debut in Arnold Wesker’s The Merchant.

Other Broadway credits include My Thing of Love (1995), A Thousand Clowns (2001), The Graduate (2002), and Twelve Angry Man (2004).
